The Outstanding Undergraduate Student Advisement and Advocacy
Award honors faculty and professional staff members who exemplify
excellence in academic advising and advocacy. Academic advising
and advocacy assists students in the development of meaningful
educational plans that enrich their studies and promote the achievement
of goals; it is fundamental to creating motivation to pursue academic
excellence. This award is one way in which the University of Connecticut
expresses its commitment to this very important component of higher
education. One faculty member and one professional staff member
will be selected to receive this award.
The recipient of the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Advisement
and Advocacy Award will receive a $500 professional development
award.
One winner will be selected in each of the following categories:
1. Tenure/Tenure Track Faculty
2. Professional Staff (which includes non-tenure track faculty)
The criteria used to determine the recipient of the Outstanding
Professional Advisor Award include evidence that the advisor:
- Has been working at UConn for a minimum of FOUR years
as a tenured or tenure track faculty member or professional staff
member.
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates a caring attitude towards students.
- Is available for frequent and regular contact with advisees.
- Seeks out advisees in informal settings.
- Engages in developmental advising.
- Motivates and encourages students to explore options
and make decisions.
- Regularly monitors student progress toward academic and
career goals.
- Assists students to identify strengths and weaknesses
and to plan a course of study that is sensitive to both.
- Is knowledgeable about university policies and resources.
- Conveys accurate information regarding courses, majors,
degree requirements and student services.
- Helps advisees effectively navigate the institutional
structure.
- Values and participates in professional development activities
to improve and expand advising skills.

Nominations are accepted from faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
Once a nomination is received, the nominee will be notified and
asked to provide certain documents necessary for committee review
Nominations are due in the Provost's office by February 1, 2008.
Nominees will be contacted by the Provost office and asked to provide
required information by February 11, 2008.
The recipients of the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Advisement
and Advocacy Award will be announced at the Instructional Excellence
Recognition Dinner on April 24, 2008 as well as posted on the Undergraduate
Education website and in the Advance and/or Daily Campus.
